Riverfields leisure: fun things to do this December

  • 06 December 2019 | Tumelo Buthelezi

The school holidays have started and the kids probably don't have much to do in a day except for staring at their cellphone screens for several hours. So, in this final Riverfields leisure guide for 2019, we suggest that you take them to the following places in and around Ekurhuleni.

Carnival City

Until 12 January 2020, the kids can have some holiday fun at Carnival City’s Pocket Park. There’s also plenty of daily activities outside the park, ranging from arts and crafts to ten-pin bowling and arcade gaming at the Magic Company. View more fun activities for the family here.

Ride Free Bike Park

Create memories that will last a lifetime by taking the kids to the Modderfontein Nature Reserve, where you’ll find the Ride Free Bike Park. The bike park has four main routes (including a kiddies’ route) that allow riders of all ages to enjoy trails while connecting with nature and appreciating the great outdoors. The park is open seven days a week from 6am to 6pm. Bring your own bike.

Emperors Palace

Take the entire family to Emperors Palace for the Garden of Lights 2019/20,  a lights show celebrating all things Christmas until 31 December 2019. All the kids’ favourite Christmas characters will be there, including Santa’s elves, Mr Snowman, the Enchanted Princess, Festive Fairy and many more.

Mount Mayhem

Tell the kids to dress in comfy clothes and drive them to Benoni for a sandboarding experience at Mount Mayhem, run by Pure Rush Industries. It’s a thrill that rewards sandboarders with an amazing rush as they glide over sand at speed. First-time sandboarders will have access to instructors who will show them how easy it is to surf down the sand dunes while having a great time. Mount Mayhem is open on weekends from 10.30am to 3.30pm. Contact +27 (0)82 605 1150 for prices and other information.

Festival Mall Ice Rink

For hours of fast-paced fun and entertaining lighting effects, grab or rent a pair of ice skates at the Festival Mall Ice Rink in Kempton Park. You can take breaks in between the rush to enjoy some refreshments from the food kiosk. The mall is close to OR Tambo International Airport, with easy access from the R21.
